The working conditions of women in Mollywood paint a disturbing reality, as revealed by a recent 290-page Hema committee report. Key issues include rampant sexual harassment, lack of basic facilities, and poor pay. It is revealed that the industry is dominated by powerful men who make open demands for sexual favors, forcing women to comply or risk losing opportunities. On sets, there’s absence of toilets and changing rooms for junior artists, with inadequate sanitary facilities during menstruation. Working conditions are not okay, with insufficient food and water, low pay, and lack of accommodation and transport. These conditions lead to physical discomfort, illness, and in some cases, hospitalization. Many women fear job loss if they complain. The report, based on interviews with industry professionals and supported by video and message evidence, exposes deep-rooted issues in Mollywood. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has validated these findings, while some directors acknowledge the need for change. Recommendations include making the industry safer for women and implementing measures to protect aspiring artists. This report highlights the urgent need for reform to ensure a safe and equitable work environment for women in the Malayalam film industry, addressing the systemic problems that have long affected Mollywood.
