Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization, aimed at preventing sperm from entering the ejaculate. It is considered a permanent form of contraception. The procedure involves making small incisions or using a no-scalpel technique to access the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra.
During the surgery, a segment of each vas deferens is removed or blocked, and the ends are sealed. The procedure typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes and can be performed under local anesthesia. Afterward, men can usually return to normal activities within a few days, although alternative contraception is needed until sperm clearance is confirmed.
