    1. Ancient Philosophies: Greece and Rome are the birthplaces of early secular thinking. Epicurus and Lucretius were among the philosophers who rejected supernatural and religious explanations of the world and promoted naturalistic ones. Comparably, Confucianism in ancient China placed the same value on social harmony and moral philosophy without turning to religious beliefs.
    2. Europe in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: The Catholic Church was a major force in Europe during this time. But the Renaissance (the 14th through the 17th centuries) brought with it a resurgence of interest in humanism and classical education, emphasizing the importance of individualism and human reason.     Secularism in India does not mean a strict separation of religion from the state. Instead, the state supports or participates in a neutral manner in the affairs of all religious groups, considering the philosophy of “Sarva Dharma Samabhava” (equal respect for all religions).
    The central characteristic of Indian secularism is that the State maintains a principled distance from all religions. It means that though the State is institutionally separated from religion and often engages with religion within the constitutionally and legally prescribed parameters. India’s secular approach has remained that of a ‘principled distance’ and not of ‘equi-distance’, as is evident from the following:

    • For the promotion of a particular value constitutive of secularism, some religions, relative to other religions, may require more interference from the State.
      • For example, to promote social equality, the State interfered in Hindu religion in order to resolve issues related to caste-based exclusions. In this regard, untouchability was abolished under Article 17 of the Indian Constitution.
    • The Indian State subsidizes different religious pilgrimages (albeit not necessarily to the same extent), including Sikhs going to Nankana Sahib Gurudwara at Kartarpur in Pakistan, Hindus visiting Amarnath Cave in Jammu and Kashmir, and Muslims going to Mecca for Hajj (until 2018).
      • The State also contributes financially to major religious celebrations, for instance, the Uttar Pradesh government allocated Rs 4200 crore for the Kumbh Mela in 2019.
    • The State reformed Hindu personal laws according to a series of new Hindu Code Bills, without imposing similar changes on religious minorities.
      • For instance, an Act that was enacted to prohibit polygamy among the Hindus was held valid because polygamy was not an essential and integral part of the Hindu religion. However, polygamy is still permitted among Muslims.
      • Similarly, Sati and Devadasi systems practised among the Hindus and instant ‘triple talaq’ among the Muslims have been abolished, as these were not deemed essential aspects of the respective religions.
    • On the basis of reasonable classification based upon religious persecution, the State brought the Citizenship Amendment Act, which grants citizenship to migrants belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian, Jain, and Parsi communities but does not include Muslims in its purview.
    • The Constitution of India prohibits using taxes for religious purposes, (Article 27) but for looking after the welfare of minorities, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has been created, which implements various schemes to provide financial assistance for minority religions specifically.

    A State interfering in one religion more than the others does not automatically depart from secularism. Indian secularism rejects the one-size-fits-all assumption and believes in the idea of respectful transformation of religions depending upon the maintenance of social fabric, as well as the State’s capacity to bring about progressive changes in a rightful manner.

    Positive secularism, followed in India, involves the state recognizing religious coexistence and striving to foster a healthy relationship between religions and the state. It prioritizes minority rights and advocates for religious pluralism.

     

    Negative secularism, on the other hand, advocates for a strict separation between religion and the state. It dictates that religion should not interfere in state matters, and vice versa. All religions are considered equal in the eyes of the law.

     

    Uniform Civil Code aims to establish a common set of laws for all citizens, replacing personal laws granted to specific religious communities. It ensures equal treatment of all citizens, regardless of their religion.

     

    Indeed it can be inferred that implementation of UCC in India will be the first step towards achieving the ideal of Negative Secularism . Which is idealised as perfect equality .

     

    Implications of implementing UCC in India can be different across different Communities as :-

    It is opposed by some minority communities because it seeks to abbrogate their personal religious laws.  And they think that this is unnecessary intervention of government in their religious matter.

    While some people thinks UCC is necessary for national integration and Equal treatment of people before law .

    It is also written in Directive Principles of State Policy in Constitution Article 44 that “The State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.”

    I think that UCC is necessary also for stopping illegal religious conversions and stopping the interference of government in all the religions.  A uniform code is required to make a strong legal system which will also be effucient .

India became a pathway for the propagation of Sufism and also became a home for the mystic saints during the early 13th century.

    The famous Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti settled in Ajmer and won the respect of both Muslims and non-Muslims. Nathpanthi yogis visited Baba Farid’s khanqah and discussed with him the nature of mysticism. Shaikh Nizamuddin Auliya made Delhi the most famous center of the Chishti Order.

    Many practices of early Chishti’s bore close resemblance to the attributes of some of the early existing, non-conformist religious orders in India, such as asceticism, bowing before the master, shaving the head of a new member into the order and organizing musical evenings within the khanqah. The egalitarian atmosphere of the khanqahs attracted large number of people from the lower section of Indian society. Caste distinctions of the Brahmanical social order were meaningless in the Chishti khanqahs. Therefore, it was these practices which led to the rise of Sufism and its acceptance into the Indian subcontinent.

Social Media is a platform which aims to work towards connecting human beings with each other and to increase their social circle. Although in today’s world social media is free and people across the world are free to share their views, still opinions must be shared taking into consideration the impact they may have on someone else’s life as well. Religion is a deeply personal and significant aspect of many people’s lives. It is one of the aspects that forms basis of a person’s life. From their upbringing to values, from cultures to traditions most of the things inculcated by them are highly influenced by religion. Everyone has the right to their beliefs and practices. Making fun of something so personal to someone else just for the sake of views is a morally wrong way of using social media. Not only does it hurt the sentiments of an individual or a community but it may also increase social tension between communities that may in turn result into bigger conflicts. In many jurisdictions, making fun of or attacking someone’s religion can fall under hate speech or anti-discrimination laws, leading to legal consequences. A content creator may also be charged under laws for bullying, harassment and for promoting communal riots. Thus it is ethically, morally and legally wrong to make fun of one’s religion on social media just to gain views.
