How can water resources be managed sustainably, particularly in areas prone to drought?

The inheritance law in India causes fragmentation of agricultural land when passed between generations. Small and marginal farm holdings have doubled since 1971.
In the current environmental scenario, we employ mechanisation and chemicals to produce profitable yields. Small and marginal farmers fall short in this race for profits.
We can employ strategies as follows to support them:
- Consolidation of Landholdings: Collection and redistribution to avoid fragments over a vast area making them difficult to manage.
- FPO: Bring small farmers together to form FPOs or cooperatives, increasing their bargaining power in market and farm assist technologies. eg: Grameen Village.
- APEDA: Promotion of exports via specialised hubs and subsidies to give FPOs & Cooperatives an edge in global supply chains.
- Climate-smart Agriculture: Natural farming, crop rotation, multiple cropping agroforestry and other sustainable modes of agriculture can help small and marginal farmers develop profits from their livelihood.
- Encouraging small farmers to employ animal husbandry and other allied activities will provide the generation of additional income.
There is a gradual shift of the population to the industry and service sector. In the meantime, we need to provide for the survival of small farmers in the global supply chains catering to countries where farming is not a primary occupation.

Drought is a natural shortfall of precipitation and water resources. Its impacts extend beyond water resources, affecting society, living conditions, and the environment. To manage water resources sustainably major measures are to reduce soil erosion by implementing soil conservation practices, augment soil moisture to enhance the soil’s water retention capability, and retard rainwater drainage to increase water availability. Additionally, these measures aim to improve water use efficiency in agriculture, ensuring sustainable water management and optimal use of resources. Methods of Water Harvesting:
These methods are useful for groundwater recharge during deficient rainfall and flash floods, improving water availability by using techniques like dams, tanks, and percolation tanks. Promoting these methods helps mitigate drought impacts and ensures sustainable water resources.
