What are the three immediate measures India should adopt toward positive impact in climate change and accomplishing it’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Climate change has far-reaching impacts on the environment, ecosystems, and human societies. Some of the most significant impacts of climate change include:
- Rising Global Temperatures: The average global temperature has risen by about 1°C since the late 1800s, and is projected to continue to rise by another 2-5°C by the end of this century if greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase.
- Extreme Weather Events: Climate change is linked to an increase in extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, and storms. These events can have devastating effects on communities and infrastructure.
- Sea-Level Rise: Melting glaciers and ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise, leading to coastal erosion, flooding, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources.
- Water Scarcity: Changes in precipitation patterns and increased evaporation due to warmer temperatures can lead to water scarcity, affecting agriculture, industry, and human consumption.
- Loss of Biodiversity: Climate change is altering ecosystems, leading to the loss of biodiversity, extinction of species, and disruption of food chains.
- Food Insecurity: Climate change can impact agricultural productivity, leading to food insecurity, especially for vulnerable communities.
- Human Migration and Displacement: Climate-related disasters and changes in living conditions can lead to human migration and displacement, straining social services and infrastructure.
- Economic Impacts: Climate change can have significant economic impacts, including damage to infrastructure, loss of productivity, and increased healthcare costs.
- Human Health Impacts: Climate change can increase the spread of diseases, heat stress, and other health problems.
- Cultural Heritage Impacts: Climate change can damage or destroy cultural heritage sites, monuments, and artifacts.
- Social Impacts: Climate change can exacerbate social inequalities, lead to mental health issues, and erode social cohesion.
Some of the specific impacts of climate change are:
- Polar ice caps melting
- Increased risk of wildfires
- Changes in ocean chemistry
- Shifts in migratory patterns
- Increased risk of landslides
- Changes in weather patterns
- Increased risk of droughts
The causes of climate change are mainly anthropogenic (human-induced), including:
- Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas)
- Deforestation
- Land-use changes (e.g., agriculture)
- Population growth
- Industrial processes

Climate change is a major concern which pose a great threat to environment and thereby affect the biodiversity. The following steps can be taken by India to curb the issue of climate change:
1. Transition to renewable energy –
45% of total electricity production takes place through coal burning and usage of thermal energy. Thus alternative sources like wind mills and solar energy can be used for electricity production. Government have introduced various schemes through which on setting up a solar cell setup on top of the house can not only help you save up on electricity bill but also help to prevent pollution.
2. Enhance usage of EV :
The electric vehicles can help curb pollution without ignition of carbon and burning of fuel on large scale. Thus this can help control pollution and thereby reduce the problem of climate change.
3. Sustainable Agriculture:
The chemical pesticides and fertilizers can be replaced by use of biofertilizers. Also, the techniques like slash and jhum cultivation should be stopped and another modern methods of farming should be introduced. This can not only provide economic growth of the country but also help stabilise the seasonal variations due to global warming and curb the problem of climate change.
4. Plans and programmes should be arranged to stop the usage of polythene and other non-biodegradable products which cause great threat to environment and climate change.
According to Robert Costanza, an ecological economist, estimated the value of the services provided by the natural world (ecosystem services) to be around $33 trillion per year. This estimate was published in his 1997 paper “The value of the world’s ecosystem services and natural capital”. Thus, the environment is indeed the biggest asset for the mankind and it is essential to introduce various action plans which can help in its sustainable development.
